Birds of a Feather

The first graders at Oakhurst STEAM Academy are studying characteristics of birds and how to care for them in their literacy class, and the needs of plants and animals in their science class.

Their amazing teachers reached out to Jane's Fund hoping to take 85 students and 15 chaperones to Carolina Raptor Center for a day, to watch their learning come to life. This trip was outside of the school's budget for the year, and wouldn't be possible without community support. At the same time, teachers have shared just how valuable this type of outside-the-classroom learning can be in helping broaden student's horizons and understanding. Jane's Fund was thrilled to give a fast and enthusiastic, "yes!"

1st grade teacher Ms. Maron shared, "The students had a wonderful time seeing the birds we've been learning about, and others they'd never heard of, up close. The Oakhurst first grade team cannot thank you enough for your generosity"
