A Parent’s Nightmare

Few know what happens to the parents of a healthy family when their 22-month-old is diagnosed with ATRT (atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor), a highly aggressive pediatric brain tumor. Previous struggles of tag-teaming work, a newborn, daycare, and daily life suddenly seem minuscule to a Mom and Dad whose lives are changed forever: 

IVs and blood draws, tears, brain radiation and chemotherapy, vomiting, paperwork for FMLA and missed work, agony, clinical trials and medical bills, dirty diapers, medical visits and long ER waits. 

Delirium and pain become the new normal. Who will stay at the hospital and who will care for the newborn at home? Healthy food, a hot shower, exercise, and sleep become unattainable as the reality of a stable two-income family suddenly falls behind on bills and life dreams are shattered. 

Overwhelmed, exhausted, and lacking hope, Atrium social worker Mallory pops into the hospital room one morning to discuss bills and gives a shocking answer to the ask for help with a car payment; "Jane's Fund is not just paying your monthly car expense but is paying off the whole car." Speechless, a sigh of relief, and joyful tears fall as one burden is removed. LOVE,  poured out and expecting nothing in return, creates a sense of hope that the journey ahead is doable. Oaklyn's family isn't sure what lies ahead, but YOUR generosity takes one fear off their plate and makes their 52nd night in the hospital a little brighter.
