Licensed to Teach

"A huge weight has just been lifted off for me that has been there for 3 years.  I have been teaching without my license and have felt a huge void that will not go away because of a piece of paper. I will forever be grateful."

Nicole Matthews has been an educator for 20 years. She currently teaches the 3rd grade at Sugar Creek Charter School and is beloved by the entire community. It's easy to see why.

After moving to Charlotte, she began classes at UNCC to earn her NC teaching license and a masters in education, simultaneously. A few semesters in, Nicole was diagnosed with breast cancer and eventually had to take a leave from her program due to illness and treatment.

Now, her transcripts are frozen until she slowly pays off backlogged tuition, keeping her from finishing her classes and taking her licensure exam here in NC.

After learning her story from our friends at Classroom Central, Jane's Fund was thrilled to be able pay off Nicole's debt, so that she can continue to enrich the classrooms, 3rd graders and community at Sugar Creek Charter and in Charlotte.  Keeping teachers like Ms. Matthews in the classroom is the greatest gift we can give our students.

"My most humble gratitude to Jane's Fund for even considering such an immense act of kindness. Sending all of my thanks and love on behalf of me and my family. I will never be able to return this act or pay it forward with finances, but all I can say is, I will continue to pour out love trust hope and my heart into students and families as it is constantly being poured out on me."
