The Underdog
Everybody loves an underdog story…especially one with many heroes working together for the win:
Remarkable 19-year-old DJ, diagnosed with medulloblastoma just over a year ago, can no longer care for himself. The brain tumor has compromised his ability to eat and breathe, requiring him to have a feeding tube and a hole with oxygen in his airway to help him breathe.
Gloria, DJ’s aunt, bravely took on the responsibility of caring for her nephew. As weeks and months of treatment have chipped away at DJ’s independence, Gloria has gradually taken more leave from work. The day-to-day struggle of balancing a job with 24-hour medical care in her home resulted in overdue bills, including a car that was repossessed.
Robin, a seasoned pediatric oncology social worker at Novant Health, stepped in to help DJ and Gloria, and reached out to Jane’s Fund. Within 24 hours, we paid Gloria’s backlogged rent bills, returned her car to the driveway, and covered future monthly expenses.
YOU, a selfless Jane’s Fund supporter and hero, who gifted invaluable support to DJ, Gloria, and Robin- bringing love, hope, and a renewed sense of light.
"There is no other resource who could have helped with this.
Such a blessing and truly a small miracle!"
- Robin, Novant Health Social Worker
