A True Love Story
Good morning Jane’s Fund,
I hope you all are doing well! I want to start off by introducing myself. My name is Alyssa and I am the social worker for the bone marrow transplant patients at Levine Children’s hospital. I am reaching out today to see if Jane’s Fund could help out one of my patients. Let me start off by telling you a little more about her, as her situation is a little unique. In 2006, when Maddie was 8 years old, she was diagnosed with Acute lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), a type of blood cancer that affects the bone marrow. She did well in remission for quite some time but ultimately relapsed in 2013 at which point she then received a bone marrow transplant. In 2022 she relapsed once more and went through 2 rounds of CART T therapy. Unfortunately, a few months ago, Maddie was found to have rising counts in Clonoseq, which indicated another relapse. She is currently admitted at Levine for a second bone marrow transplant, however, this is incredibly risky with a high likelihood she will not recover, and if she does, there is a high risk she will relapse again. She received her transplant on 1/23 and on 1/26 she was transferred to the ICU, where she remains for the next few weeks.
On a more personal level, Maddie embodies the definition of a kind and genuine soul. She met her husband, Eli, in 2021, and they married in 2022, just months before her last relapse.Their bond, strengthened by their faith, has continued to deepen their love over the last few years. Eli has been by Maddie’s side through it all since the day they met. At the risk of sounding too much like a millennial, I will say Maddie and Eli are truly “relationship goals.” While they have strong support from family, friends, and their church community, they are facing financial stress, even more so now with Maddie back in the hospital. Maddie had to stop working completely a few months ago. Eli has significantly cut back working to be at the bedside with his wife. He is now only working 2 nights a week. Their main stressor right now is their mortgage, which they are struggling to pay. My hope is that Jane’s fund would cover 3 months of mortgage payments to help relieve some of this burden. Of course, any amount of support would be greatly appreciated!
As always, thank you Jane’s Fund for all you continue to do for our patients. It is always so appreciated!
~ Alyssa
